Jacques Kallis came out with an all-round performance as Royal Challengers Bangalore thrashed Otago Volts by 80 runs here on Monday night. At the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kallis showed why he is rated as one of the best all-rounders in the world by first hammering an unbeaten 73 and then taking three wickets. It has helped RCB go through to the next round from the group, along with Cape Cobras.

After RCB elected to bat, Kallis carried his bat through by scoring his career-best T20 knock, which included four boundaries and two sixes. Later, the South African got a double breakthrough early on to reduce Otago to 19 for two. One of his victims was dangerous Brendon McCullum. There was more to come. In his very next over, Kallis bowled a wicket maiden.

From thereon, the RCB spinners, led by skipper Anil Kumble, took  charge as Otago kept losing wicket at regular intervals. Anil Kumble was the pick of the bowlers taking two for 20 runs, while Roelof van der Merwe scalped one.

Earlier, Kallis’ knock and a last over onslaught by Ross Taylor helped RCB reach the second highest total by any team in the championship. Taylor hit 24 runs in last over, including three sixes, to take RCB’s total to 188 for three in 20 overs. Taylor remained unbeaten on 32 off 11 deliveries. Along with Kallis, he added 54 runs for the third wicket.

Meanwhile, Kallis, who opened the innings with Robin Uthappa, also helped RCB to achieve their best ever opening partnership. The RCB openers started cautiously but soon Uthappa got going. They added 75 runs for the first wicket before Uthappa done in by a superb catch by Craig Cumming. He made 42 in 31 balls.

Thereafter, Kallis took charge playing a flawless innings. He completed his 50 in 33 balls and added 69 for the second wicket with Virat Kohli, who scored 32 off 19 balls.
