The British driver drove into McLaren's pit box, from where he was waved through by his former team's pit crew before finally changing tyres with his new team.

This school boy move left fans and even his girl-friend Nicole Scherzinger baffled. Later, the driver went on to say that both teams looked very similar and perhaps that was the reason why he goofed up.

The 28-year-old driver was fortunate that the Mercedes pits are further along the pit lane than the McLaren ones, otherwise he would have had to drive all the way round once more.

Looking for new avenues the F1 driver left McLaren a team with which he made his debut and went on to win the 2008 Driver's Championship with for a switch to Mercedes.

In Malaysia, the driver went on to finish the race third behind race winner Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
