Le Quang Liem has won the 4th Kolkata Open Chess tournament. On Thursday, the Vietnamese GM drew against IM S Satyapragyan in the final round to clinch the title and pocket a cheque of Rs3 lakh.
Local GMs Sandipan Chanda and Surya Sekhar Ganguly took a quick draw in anticipation of snaring top prizes but they ended up in fourth and eighth positions respectively. After drawing against Liem, Satyapragyan finished seventh.
Top seed GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan beat defending champion GM Viktor Laznicka of the Czech Republic to claim the second place. GM Anton Filippov of Uzbekistan won against GM Ni Hua of China but ended up third.
GM Nigel Short of England scored a fine victory over GM Mikheil Mchedlishvili of Georgia and finished 5th. Ten players made their IM norms in the tournament. Some of them were Abhishek Das, A Upadhyay, BS Shivananda, Shyam Nikhil, Akshat Khamparia.
