New Zealand top order batsmen once again failed to make a solid start in the second innings against the mighty South Africa at Seddon Park, losing four quick wickets.
Twelve wickets fell on the first day of the second Test match, and second day was no different.
The Black Caps ended the day at 65-4, trailing by three runs, after South Africa were bundled out for 253 earlier in the day. Kane Williamson (41) and Daniel Vettori (0) are at the wicket.
When the Black Caps started their second innings, they were rocked by a triple setback early on, and were reeling at 7-3 at one stage, Stuff.co.nz reports.
First to go was Rob Nicol, who was bowled by Vernon Philander in the second over. He was followed by Brendon McCullum, who was then out lbw in Philander's next over, and Martin Guptill was the next one to follow them.
Earlier in the day South Africa managed a lead of 68 runs.
AB de Villiers led the way for the Proteas with 83, which included 10 fours, and he was the ninth man out when Vettori had him playing the ball into the pitch and back onto the stumps.
The fact the visitors got a lead was not unexpected but the margin of it was a fair chunk smaller than what was anticipated.
That was due to an excellent bowling effort from Mark Gillespie, who, playing in his first test since December 2008, captured his best test figures, with 5-59 off 15 overs.
