The North-London club also confirmed Freddie Ljungberg will be taking charge as interim head coach.

Arsenal have confirmed the sacking of manager Unai Emery after the club's 2-1 defeat to German side Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday in the Europa League.

Even though the club's officials publicly backed Emery during the recent international break and claimed that he is “the right man for the job” but that “things need to improve”.

But after AFC's 2-2 draw against Southampton on Saturday and Thursday’s UEL defeat seemed to have changed the mind of the board members.

The North-London club also confirmed Freddie Ljungberg will be taking charge as interim head coach.

Arsenal board member Josh Kroenke said: “Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.

Under Emery, Arsenal have failed to win any of their past seven matches, marking their worst run of form since February 1992.

“The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required,” said the son of the majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke, speaking on behalf of the board.

“We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward."

“The search for a new head coach is under way and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete.”
