Rahul Dravid’s father Sharad was a happy man. Any father would be if his son played for the country and  went on to captain the team.

Dravid Sr, 79, passed away here at his residence on Wednesday afternoon.

Last year, in one of the rare interviews, Dravid Sr had told dna that though he has seen many great moments in his son’s career, the proudest was seeing his son debut on the hallowed turf at Lord’s.

“Rahul might have played many great knocks but that was the most memorable moment.

Though he missed a century by just five runs, his Lord’s debut was the best thing to have happened,” Dravid Sr had said.

Dravid Sr seemed not one bit disappointed seeing his son retire. “Everyone has to retire one day. But I think Rahul has achieved much more than what we expected. Playing for the country for so long is not easy,” he had said.

As for the name ‘Jammy’ that Rahul got, Dravid Sr explained the story behind it. “When Rahul would go to play, we’d be concerned about his food. Since I worked with Kissan, my wife would give him a bottle of jam.

“I think it was Javagal Srinath who started calling him Jammy His teammates noticed that the bottle was always in his bag. I think it was Javagal Srinath who started calling him Jammy.”

The Karnataka State Cricket Association has condoled Sharad Dravid’s demise.
