Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has said the Spanish giants are desperate to have ace striker Wayne Rooney alongside old Manchester United pal Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Manchester United striker scored twice in a 3-0 win over Fulham, taking his goal tally for the season to 32.

Calderon said, "It seems that it's an obsession to go for Rooney. Sometimes it's a point of money and if there's a proposal maybe there will be a deal. I don't know if it is possible to spend again another €100 million. I imagine in that case you would have to sell."

Current Real president Florentino Perez and the rest of the world have been stunned by Rooney's goal haul, The Sun reports. And, yesterday, teammate Dimitar Berbatov insisted he will fire United to a fourth successive title. The Bulgarian has even tipped Rooney to break the 40-goal mark.

Berbatov said, "The title race is tight but I'm convinced we are going to win it. Chelsea and Arsenal are great teams and we have some difficult games ahead."

"But we have home advantage for those big games so I am optimistic that we will be champions. I think Wayne can get over 40 goals. I think at the moment he's the best in the world. And he is still so young so he has plenty of chances to get greater."

Rooney has a maximum of 13 games left to try to eclipse Ronaldo's total of 42 goals two seasons ago.
