Even though former Australian captain Ricky Ponting questioned Sachin Tendulkar’s role during the 2008 ‘monkeygate’ scandal, Australians still seem to be in love with the master. Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Patrick Suckling, is no exception.
“Sachin will be greatly missed by cricket lovers,” Patrick told dna on Friday. However, he was quick to add, “Glad that he (Sachin) is not going to play against Australia again.”
Suckling said he has “mixed emotions” regarding Tendulkar’s retirement.
“He is a loved cricketer around the world. Sachin is greatly admired and respected in Australia. He is a global figure,” he added, while wishing the maestro “very best” for the future.
Sachin has a special place in the hearts of all Aussie fans, especially after the great Don Bradman referred to Tendulkar’s batting style “as his own”. Such was Tendulkar’s influence Down Under that the Australian government conferred him with the Member of the Order of Australia for his service to India-Australia relations by promoting goodwill, friendship and sportsmanship.
