HAMBURG: Russian Maria Sharapova moved to second place in the WTA women's tennis rankings released on Monday, edging closer to number one Amelia Mauresmo of France.
Sharapova claimed her fifth title of the year Sunday at the Linz Open when she beat defending champion and number two seed Nadia Petrova 7-5 6-2 in an all-Russian final.
Sharapova had already enjoyed victories at the US Open, Indian Wells, San Diego and Zurich.
Former number one Justine Henin-Hardenne slips to third while Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic comes into the top 10 at 10th.
