The governing body of world tennis said Wayne Odesnik could face a two-year ban after the American player pleaded guilty in an Australian court to importing human growth hormone (HGH) on Friday.

Odesnik, the 24-year-old world number 98, pleaded guilty to importing HGH after eight vials each containing six milligrams were found in his luggage in January before he planned to play in Brisbane and at the Australian Open, local media reported.

He was fined 8000 Australian dollars ($7,286) and was ordered to pay costs, Australian Associated Press said.

"For possession there's a possible two-year ban," a spokeswoman for the International Tennis Federation said on Friday.

"We know the court hearing is over and we now await a report to be sent to our Tennis Anti-Doping Programme. Until then we can''t provide any further comment."

The ITF is a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Authority's code under which a two-year ban can be imposed for possession of prohibited substances.

Odesnik reached a career-high ranking of 77 in April last year.
