The Tamil Nadu Government on Friday announced a cash award of Rs 25 lakh to the newly-crowned world chess champion Viswanathan Anand.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government on Friday announced a cash award of Rs 25 lakh to the newly-crowned world chess champion Viswanathan Anand.

By winning the world chess championship for the second time at Mexico in September 2007, Anand had brought laurels to the state, an official press release here said.

Congratulating the champion for the victory, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had granted the cash prize on behalf of the Government, it added.

The Chief Minister also awarded cash awards to the tune of Rs 96.05 lakh to 28 sports persons, including 11 women, who had won medals in the recently-held Commonwealth games in Melbourne and the tenth South Asian Games held in Sri Lanka.
