NEW DELHI: Former Chief Selector Dilip Vengsarkar on Wednesday criticised national selectors for replacing Gautam Gambhir with greenhorn Tamil Nadu opener M Vijay in the crucial fourth cricket Test against Australia and said a tested player should have been drafted into the team.

"When I first heard it, I was very surprised. No doubt he's a good player, he has scored some runs in domestic cricket, but I don't agree with the selection committee to draft him in the Test squad directly, that too for such a crucial encounter," Vengsarkar said on the ever of the match.

The former India captain also suggested that there were far more experienced players waiting in the wings then Vijay and the place should have gone to them.

"I am amazed that selectors picked Murali (Vijay) ahead of players like Waseem Jaffar and Delhi's Aakash Chopra," he said.

Vengsarkar also expressed concern about Yuvraj Singh's form, saying "it's high time Yuvraj starts scoring. His form in all forms of cricket has been dipping down and selectors should have a word with him".

He also felt "Yuvi's talent was matchless and as soon as he comes back to his scoring ways, it will be good for the Indian cricket".
