England's ace striker Wayne Rooney has brushed aside talk of burn-out before arriving to South Africa for World Cup, as he is on course to play nearly 70 matches.

He is one of several England players at risk of being over-run in the final stages of the season, in a category that also includes Chelsea pair Frank Lampard and John Terry.

Lampard and Terry are two of England's most influential players and could feature in more than 60 games if they reach the latter stages of the Champions League and FA Cup, News of the World reports.

"I certainly hope there's no risk. I don't think anything will change before the World Cup no matter how many games I play. Even if it's 60 or nearer 70, I still feel fresh. I'm playing up front now and it's easier than when I was on the wing when I had to chase back and defend," Rooney said.

"I'm often up front on my own, but it's different for me with five people in midfield doing a lot of the work. I don't feel tired," he said.

Rooney's conversion to central striker this season has coincided with his best run of form since he joined Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson claims he is now one of the best players in the world, ranked alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.

He is unquestionably the main man at United, thriving on the responsibility as he chases down three trophies in the final phase of the season.

He will join up with the England squad next week to prepare for the friendly with Egypt, under a new captain.
