The mice become transparant after being treated by the uDisco process

Scientists have developed a method to illuminate rodents and study their brain; they feel that this could help study mental disorders in future

Earlier this week, scientists developed a method to make mice transparent, while illuminating the nerve paths that run through the rodents’ bodies.

In a process that is termed uDisco, scientists have found a way to study the animal’s nervous system without having slice into sections of its tissues.

Through the process, a microscope is used to trace the neurons from the animal’s brain and spinal cord all the way to its paws.

While speaking to The New York Times, Ali Ertürk, a neuroscientist from the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich in Germany and an author of the paper said that with this technology, the neural connectivity in mice could be mapped in3D

Currently, the technique is only being used on mice and rats, but scientists believe that it could one day be used to map the human brain. If this is a success, they feel that it could be particularly useful to study various mental disorders.
