India is currently battling the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic which has been wreaking havoc in the country since 2020. Amid the battle against the virus, oximeters have become an essential household item and with their demand increase, prices of pulse oximeters have also been hiked by manufacturers.

Now, in order to replace an oximeter, a Kolkata-based health startup has developed an app for mobile. The app called CarePlix Vital's is important as it can help monitor your blood oxygen level, pulse, and respiration rates.

If a report by BGR.in is to be believed, the user needs to use the mobile app and place a finger on the phone's rear camera and flashlight. Once this is done, within seconds, the oxygen saturation (SpO2), pulse and respiration rates are displayed on the device.

Speaking about the same, Subhabrata Paul, Co-Founder CareNow Healthcare told The Indian Express, "People needed a pulse oximeter or similar wearables such as a smartwatch to get their vitals such as oxygen saturation and pulse rate. The underlying technology in all of this is photoplethysmography or PPG."

For the uninformed, the CarePlix Vital app is a registration-based application. Reports state, "In a matter of 40 seconds, the reading is displayed and with the help of an internet connection, the readings can be saved on cloud for the record."

Speaking about the idea behind CarePlix Vital's, co-founder Monosij Sengupta said, "The idea stemmed from the known fact of cardiovascular deaths in the country."

The clinical trial for the device was conducted earlier in 2021 by the team in Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital Kolkata with 1200 people.
