WASHINGTON: A buyer in Britain on Friday won an eBay auction for one of Sony's newly launched PlayStation 3 game consoles with a bid of $15,100.
The 60-gigabyte console, which retails for $599, was one of thousands being offered on the Internet auction site by profiteers hoping to turn a quick buck after the PS3's US launch at midnight Thursday.
The powerful machine made its world debut in Japan on November 10, and sold out within hours.
Sony made only 400,000 units available in the United States, while in Europe, the console does not go in sale until March.
The British buyer, bidïboyïwalshey, had made the top bid so far for a completed auction.
Other sellers were offering their PS3s at a "buy it now" price of $25,000, although they had no bidders.
