When life is bleak or not going the way you planned, or especially now, amid the coronavirus self-isolation requirement, television is an opportunity for us to escape into another world – one with our favourite characters. The characters thus play a major part of our lives, and the happiest ones always manage to bring a smile on our faces no matter what.

So this International Day of Happiness, let’s pay an ode to some of the happiest characters on television who have never failed to make us laugh or at the least leave us smiling from one ear to the other.

1. Phoebe on FRIENDS

Phoebe Buffay always had her priorities set on the world famous show, FRIENDS – doing good, making other people feel good and always being there for her friends. Her quirky outlook on life and obscene guitar-playing quickly helped us warm ourselves to her character and many times hooting ad rooting for her. Viewers can watch Phoebe’s eccentric sense of humour and style on FRIENDS that is currently streaming on Netflix.

2. Alexis Rose on Schitt’s Creek

Alexis Rose is probably one of the strangest, most fun characters to watch on television. After moving to Schitt’s Creek post living the big life in New York City, the change may have gotten the better of every character of the Rose family – but not Alexis. Her shine doesn’t dull one bit and she’s a breath of fresh hair on the small screen. She stands out – not only as the character who is fashionably OTT on the series but also because of the outlandish, strange experiences of being kidnapped, being a teen model etc that she keeps giving out to other folks in Schitt’s Creek, and better yet to all the viewers and fans! Audiences can catch Alexis’ bright sunshine-like demeanour on Schitt’s Creek on Comedy Central!

3. Phil Dunphy on Modern Family

Phil Dunphy takes the prize for not only being the funniest character on Modern Family but also on television. And his comic timing is not just attributed to his physical sense of comedy but also to his character that is ready to go to any length and strive to make everyone happy around him. What’s more? His happiness is contagious! Even his wife Claire in one episode says that Phil is the kid she married. Catch Phil and all his feel-good madness on Modern Family that airs on Star World!

4. Jake on Brooklyn Nine Nine

Jake Peralta is another television character that is sunshine in a human form. He has a mind of a child and is not afraid to look goofy in front of anyone. In fact, he almost always succeeds in moulding people around him into his goofy self! But that’s not it – his puppy-dog eyes are capable of amassing unimaginable amounts of sympathy despite his sometimes misplaced bravado. Catch Jake and all his on-the-job experiences on Netflix!

5. Crowley on Good Omens

5/5

David Tennant’s Crowley is stylish, clever and witty like no other supernatural character on television. It’s a delight to watch him on-screen for the devil he is with a heart of gold. As demonic as he’s supposed to be, he much rather spend time on Earth where he gets to bask in the planet’s abundant supply of expensive liquor, best restaurants, free will et al. Watching him fight God’s plan for an apocalypse on Earth is the most charming and fun performance of a devil on television yet. Catch Crowley for a dose of happiness and revelry on Amazon Prime!
