The most lavish and expensive party in history took place in 1971 to celebrate the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. It was so grand that it was attended by emperors, kings, queens, princes, sheiks, sultans, and Hollywood stars.

This party which lasted for three days was attended by 600 people. The expenditure was just $100 million. However, if inflation is taken into account, then it comes to Rs 5000 crore at today's rate.

The party was hosted by Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, the last monarch of Iran, and changed the fate of Iran.

The food and the wine for the party were provided by the Parisian restaurant Maxim's and 600 guests dined for over five and a half hours, making for the longest and most lavish official banquet in modern history, as per the Guinness Book of World Records.

A city of tents was created in the desert to house the guests for which 40 trucks and 100 planes were imported from France.

After the three-day royal extravaganza, all the guests left. News soon spread in the media about what the party cost. This fueled their anger against the Shah.

By 1979, the situation worsened and the Shah had to flee his own country with his family. Ayatollah Khomeini then returned to Iran and the Islamic Republic of Iran was established.
