An air hostess was allegedly molested by a bike taxi rider on the night of August 12 at Chanakyapuri in New Delhi. The police said that the woman booked the ride from Laxmi Nagar at around 11 pm. The bike taxi rider, whose identity has been given as Jaiveer, 35 years old, from Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh, is said to have misbehaved with her and tried to touch her inappropriately.

The police statement says, “The incident took place around 11.45 p.m. on August 7. Around 11 pm, the woman booked a bike ride to her home in Dwarka from Laxmi Nagar, where she had come to meet a friend.”
“While travelling, Jaiveer tried to change the route even while looking at the map on his phone. After some time, it started raining heavily. He stopped the bike under a tree at Simon Bolivar Marg, near Chanakyapuri, and asked them to get down and take shelter with him. After that, he tried to molest and tried to pull towards him,” the woman explained.

The air hostess managed to escape, and immediately after she got out, she reported the incident to the local police. The police and other security forces opened an investigation into the matter. Delhi Police registered a case under the necessary sections under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 74, 76, 109(1), and 115(2). Jaiveer was arrested in Gurgaon within a day of the occurrence of the incident.

This event has provoked discourse on the safety of women in Delhi, particularly in shared transport services such as Uber and other transport means. In this regard, the Delhi Police have taken time to publicly respond to the rising phenomena in the city by pledging to safeguard the ladies. They have urged people who have undergone such experiences to seek police action on the incidents without any kind of fear.
