If you are a 90s kid, you most definitely grew up watching one of the most popular cartoons that was ever produced, 'SpongeBob SquarePants'. The show held a strong significance in our lives and mostly thought us the meaning of life and friendship. But could you have ever thought that SpongeBob and his friend Patrick would exist in the real world?

Well, they didn't until an American biologist, Christopher Mah came across them under waters in the Atlantic Ocean. Seeing what he saw, he couldn't believe his eyes and decided to share it with the people on the internet. While posting the picture of the real SpongeBob and Patrick on Twitter, he said, "I normally avoid these (references)..but WOW. REAL LIFE Sponge Bob and Patrick! "

In the picture, one can see a yellow sponge beside a pink starfish just like it was in the show. Both were found approximately 1,885m deep in the Atlantic Ocean near an underwater mountain called the Retriever Seamount.

The discovery was made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Okeanos Explorer this week.

Biologist Mah, who specialises in sea stars stated that there are at least a thousand varieties of sea sponges in the sea but they rarely square in shape. Speaking to a daily, Mah said, "I thought it would be funny to make the comparison, which for once was actually kind of comparable to the iconic images/colors of the cartoon characters."

.

He also said that he was surprised by the sea sponge's bright yellow colour which is generally unusual that deep down in the sea.

The sponge in the image belonged to the genus Hertwigia, while the starfish’s scientific name is Chondraster. Since the picture was posted on social media, netizens went crazy and have shared and liked the picture numerous times.
