The diplomatic tussle between India and Maldives erupted when PM Modi shared images from his visit to Lakshadweep on January 4.
The pictures showed him snorkelling and enjoying "moments of pure bliss" on the pristine beaches of Lakshadweep.
In response to Lakswadeep’s promotion by PM Modi, Maldives Ministers criticized PM Modi and the visit on social media, which angered several Indians including celebrities.
This led to the beginning of an online debate with hashtags like #ExploreIndianIslands and #BoycottMaldives against the "unprovoked hate" from Maldivians.
While comparing the economies of the two countries, Maldives with a GDP of 6.5 and its massive debt owing to China, stands nowhere in front of India.
In fact, India’s two most richest people, Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani are so rich that they can purchase around 15-15 Maldives with their whopping wealth.
According to Bloomberg, Ambani currently owns massive wealth worth $97.5 billion.
While Adani's wealth is around $94.5 billion.
Thus, in terms of wealth, it is not wrong to say that these two billionaires can buy numerous small island countries like Maldives.
