What is the original full form of MBBS? It will twist your tongue

Varsha Agarwal

Ever wondered why the abbreviation of the undergraduate course, MBBS doesn't match the full form?

The full form of MBBS is Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, which ideally should be abbreviated as BMBS.

MBBS's true expansion is not Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery but part-Latin and part-English.

The Latin term for the undergraduate medical degree is "Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae"

MBBS has its roots in Latin terms which makes the abbreviation quite clear. Well, there's no inherent difference between MBBS and BMBS.

MBBS and BMBS both represent the same combined undergraduate medical degree. The choice of abbreviation often depends on historical conventions.

Historically, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery were separate degrees, but they are now usually awarded together.

MBBS is an undergraduate medical degree that runs for 5 years. A one-year internship is also added to the course’s life span.
