7 controversial Bollywood films that were banned in India but became hits overseas

Over the years, a number of Indian films faced bans in India, either through court orders or via CBFC’s refusal to certify them
But a number of these films were released internationally in theatres or festivals where they found success
Paanch (2001): Anurag Kashyap’s directorial debut about a murderous band was banned for glorifying drugs, sex and violence
The Pink Mirror (2004): The film was denied a rating by the CBFC due to the same-sex intimate scenes in it
Water (2005): Deepa Mehta’s film on widow remarriage faced calls for ban and was banned in India but later became Canada’s official entry to the Oscars
Inshallah, Football (2010): The documentary about a footballer from Kashmir was finished in 2010 but never released in India even as it has earned praise in film festivals overseas
Dazed In Doon (2010): The movie, which showed drug abuse and sex in one of India’s top schools, never saw release after opposition from the school
Unfreedom (2015): CBFC denied a rating to the film based on same sex relationships. It was later released on Netflix
Toofan Singh (2017): The CFBC banned this movie about Khalistan Liberation Force member Toofan Singh in 2016. It was released internationally in 2017
