The celebrated lyricist Gulzar celebrates his 89th birthday on August 18. On his special day, here's a look at some interesting facts about his life and career.

Gulzar was born as Sampooran Singh Kalra in a Sikh family in Dina, Jhelum in British India (present-day Pakistan) in 1934.

Gulzar is married to the veteran actress Rakhee and their daughter is the famous director Meghna Gulzar of Raazi and Talvar fame.

Gulzar has also directed multiple critically acclaimed films such as Mere Apne, Paricha, Koshish, Aandhi, and Mausam.

Gulzar also directed, wrote, and produced Doordarshan television serial Mirza Ghalib starring Naseeruddin Shah in the titular role.

Gulzar won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, along with AR Rahman, for Slumdog Millionaire's Jai Ho.

The multiple award-winning lyricist was appointed as the Chancellor of the Assam University in 2013.
