White tongue: 5 reasons why your tongue turns white

Tongue having a layer of thick whitish film is called ‘white tongue’ which could lead to symptoms like bad breath or a persistent bad taste or redness in your mouth.

Excessive smoking leads to an increase in the dead cells which forms a thin white layer on the tongue.

Poor oral hygiene can also cause white tongue. 

Due to overgrowth of bacteria and yeast in the tongue, the papillae of the tongue or the small bumps become swollen, discolored and inflamed.

Dehydration is another reason why we might have white tongue

Another condition which also causes white tongue is called Leukoplakia whose symptoms include gray or white patches on the tongue and mouth

Alcohol consumption can cause this condition as well.

One of the reasons of increased infections like white tongue, Candidiasis is a dry mouth.

White tongue can be an indication that you are dehydrated.
