EPFO removes Aadhaar from list of acceptable documents for proof for updation

Aadhaar is no longer accepted by EPFO as proof of birth! The UIDAI Directive induces a shift in policy. Examine the legal ramifications and any required adjustments.

The Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) removed Aadhaar from the list of acceptable documents as proof of date of birth,

UIDAI criticized Aadhaar for being used as proof of birth, stating it's identity verification, not proof of birth, as per the Aadhaar Act, 2016.

EPFO removed Aadhaar from acceptable birth date correction documents, following UIDAI's directive, with approval from the Central Provident Fund Commissioner.

UIDAI's circular clarified that Aadhaar is not proof of birth date, and recent judgments, including one by the Bombay High Court, further support this.

Authentication User Agencies (AUAs) and Know Your Customer User Agencies (KUAs) were all notified of UIDAI's directive by Circular No. 08 of 2023.

In order to ensure widespread implementation, EPFO sent a circular to all ACCs (Zones), RPFCs (Regional offices), and the Office in charge of ROs.

The Internal System Division (ISD) was given the go-ahead to update the application software to conform to the revised guidelines.

This development demonstrated how identity verification is changing and emphasized how crucial it is to maintain compliance with the most recent regulatory changes.
