How to make white butter at home

Pour fresh, full-fat cream into a large bowl or mixing bowl.

Get Fresh Cream

Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to beat the cream at high speed until it thickens and starts to separate.

Whip the Cream

Continue whipping until the butter forms solid clumps and the buttermilk separates. 

Separate Butter and Buttermilk

Pour off the liquid buttermilk from the bowl and set it aside for other uses.

Drain the Buttermilk

Place the butter in a bowl of cold water. Gently knead it with your hands to rinse out any remaining buttermilk.

Rinse the Butter

Squeeze the butter in your hands or use a clean cloth to remove excess water.

Drain Again

If you like, mix in a pinch of salt for flavor.

Add Salt (Optional)

And that’s it! You have homemade white butter ready to enjoy.
