Why are women's shirt buttons on left side?

Shirts are often worn by women these days, especially by working professionals.

Today, most clothes no longer determine one's gender. But in case of shirts, there is still a distinction on basis of buttons.

Have you ever noticed that buttons on women's shirts are on the left side? But why so?

There are many theories behind it since the 1850s.

Wealthy women back then did not dress themselves, their lady's helper did.

Since most people were right-handed, this made it easier for their helpers to button the dress.

Another theory is that many women mocked French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's hand-in-waistcoat pose.

He then ordered women's shirts to have buttons on the opposite side of men's.

Back then, buttons were considered expensive. Hence, women wanted to copy rich women's clothing.
