The Mughal Empire, despite its vast territorial reach and military prowess at times, faced its share of defeats. Here are eight Mughal kings who experienced significant losses in battles:
Babur: The founder of the Mughal Empire, Babur faced several challenges in his conquests. He lost battles against the Rajput Confederacy led by Rana Sanga at the Battle of Khanwa in 1527, although he ultimately emerged victorious in the long term.
Humayun: Babur's son, Humayun, faced numerous setbacks during his reign. He lost the empire to Sher Shah Suri after being defeated in the Battle of Kannauj in 1540. He later regained power but faced further challenges before his death.
Akbar: While Akbar the Great is known for expanding the Mughal Empire to its greatest extent, he did face some military setbacks. For instance, he encountered resistance from the Afghan tribes and suffered defeats in battles like the Siege of Chittorgarh in 1568.
Jahangir: Although Jahangir's reign was relatively stable compared to his predecessors, he faced internal rebellions and external threats. One notable defeat was in the Battle of Hoshiarpur against the combined forces of his rebellious son, Khusrau, and the Sikh Guru Arjan Dev in 1606.
Shah Jahan: While Shah Jahan's reign is often associated with architectural splendor, he had to deal with several revolts and uprisings. One significant loss was against the Marathas, who defeated the Mughal army at the Battle of Bhopal in 1644.
Aurangzeb: Despite Aurangzeb's long and eventful reign, he faced numerous military challenges, particularly towards the latter part of his rule. He faced significant resistance from the Marathas, including defeats at the Battle of Wai in 1689 and the Battle of Satara in 1700.
Bahadur Shah I: Bahadur Shah I faced several rebellions during his reign, including the Jat rebellion led by Churaman and the Rajput rebellion of the Rathors. While not all battles resulted in significant losses, these rebellions posed significant challenges to his rule.
