How women astronauts manage their periods in space

Prashant Tamta

Many women face challenges dealing with menstrual cycles such as cramps.

But have you ever wondered how women astronauts manage their periods in space?

Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman who ventured into space in 1963.

Since then, over 60 women have gone to space.

Many gynaecologists and researchers say that the female menstrual cycle doesn’t change in space.

They say it can happen normally in space as on Earth.

Women can continue menstruating or use contraceptive pills to suppress their periods in space.

However, menstruating in space requires menstrual products and handling waste disposal.

Hence, many female astronauts opt for oral contraceptive pills to suppress periods.
