Sidewinder is considered the fastest snake in the world for its sidewinding locomotion technique.

Sidewinders are perfectly adapted to their arid environment, the sandy deserts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.

Venomous: The sidewinder is a venomous pit viper. It has heat-sensing pits on its face that help it to locate warm-blooded prey, like rodents and lizards.

Nocturnal: Sidewinders are primarily nocturnal creatures. They come out at night to hunt, when the desert temperatures are cooler.

Threat Display: When threatened, the sidewinder will often coil its tail and vibrate it rapidly in the sand, creating a buzzing sound.

Relatively Small: Sidewinders are on the smaller side compared to other rattlesnakes. Adults typically grow to be between 17 and 30 inches long.

Burrowing: Sidewinders are capable burrowers and will sometimes bury themselves in the sand to ambush prey or to escape the heat.

Horned or Sidewinder Rattlesnake: The sidewinder is also known as the horned rattlesnake due to a small, pointed supraorbital scale above each eye.
