Anglo-Zanzibar War, which took place on August 27, 1896, was a brief conflict between the British Empire and the East African island sultanate of Zanzibar.

It was fought in Sultanate of Zanzibar, an island nation in the Indian Ocean near modern Tanzania.

After death of the previous sultan, Zanzibari Prince Barghash rejected the British Empire’s preferred successor and occupied the palace.

This forced imperial cruisers to fire on his position.

The war lasted only 40 minutes, making it the shortest war in recorded history.

The sultan's military sustained 500 casualties, while only one British soldier was injured.

The war marked the end of the Sultanate of Zanzibar as a sovereign state and the beginning of British rule.
