What is difference between Lawyer and Advocate in India? Who has more powers?

Jaisal Kaur

Lawyers and advocates are used synonymously for legal professionals.

However, there are some slight differences between lawyer and advocate in India.

Lawyer is denoted for a legal professional who has graduated with a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree.

An advocate represents a client in a court of law, whereas a lawyer offers legal advice to a client.

All advocates are lawyer, but every lawyer is not an advocate.

When a lawyer joins the State Bar Council and clears the All India Bar Council exam, he/she is called an advocate.

An advocate has more responsibility and a bigger role as he can advise clients in legal issues and represent them in court.
