Rakesh Sharma was is the Indian to go to the space. He spent 7 days, 21 hours, and 40 minutes in space during the joint Indo-Soviet mission.

Rakesh Sharma flew aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft launched on April 2, 1984.

Rakesh Sharma's famous words from space were "Saare Jahan Se Achha" when asked by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi how India looked from space.

He was conferred with the honor of being the first Indian to travel to space. Sharma was also awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award.

Before becoming an astronaut, Rakesh Sharma was a pilot in the Indian Air Force and after his space mission, he continued to serve in the Indian Air Force.

He likes to stay away from limelight and currently resides in Bengaluru, with his wife Madhu and other family members.
