Who owns Delhi's Khan Market?

Khan Market is a prominent market in Delhi, situated in Lutyens' Delhi, known for its high-ranking officials and wealthy residents.

Founded in 1951, it was originally designed to provide homes for people who migrated from Pakistan to India after the partition.

The market is named after Abdul Jabbar Khan, a freedom fighter who helped rescue Hindus from Pakistan.

Initially, the area had just three houses. Over time, it evolved into a bustling commercial and residential hub with numerous shops and restaurants.

The market is controlled by the government, with most shops operating on leases. Initial rents were very low but increased significantly in 1956.

Today, commercial space rents in Khan Market range from Rs 1800 to Rs 2200 per square foot, with some shops paying over Rs 6 lakh per month.

There were attempts to rename the market during Rajnath Singh’s tenure as Home Minister, but shopkeepers opposed the change.

Khan Market remains a key destination for shopping and dining, blending historical charm with modern vibrancy.
