The Sriwijaya Air passenger plane was carrying 62 people from Jakarta to Pontianak in Indonesia when it disappeared from radar soon after take-off.
In a horrifying incident, a Boeing 737 passenger plane in Indonesia disappeared from radar screens four minutes after take-off from Jakarta on Saturday (January 9). Since then, the country's authorities say that they have found the location where they believed the plane crashed into the Java sea.

The Sriwijaya Air passenger plane was carrying 62 passengers on its way to Pontianak in the West Kalimantan province. The investigators and rescue teams deployed since the disappearance found and analysed items believed to be wreckage from the crashed aeroplane.

Planes and teams deployed for help

Plane lost contact after take-off
From the information available, the passenger plane lost contact soon after take-off and it did not send a distress signal. According to a report by Flightradar24.com, the plane dropped more than 3,000 metres in less than a minute. Some witnesses have also come out to say that they had heard an explosion. (Image: Reuters)
Families waiting at the airports
The passenger plane was carrying 50 passengers, including seven children and three babies. It is reported that it had 12 crew members as well. Families of passengers are waiting at both the source and destination airport for any news. All passengers were Indonesian. (Image: Reuters)
Location of the plane crash site
The National Rescue and Search Agency in Indonesia has now identified the possible crash site of the passenger plane and ships have been sent there. It is not yet known if there were survivors. (Image: Reuters)
