BEIJING: At least 16 people were killed and 14 injured when the roof of a newly-built house collapsed on the guests gathered there in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the local government said on Wednesday.

The house owner, from Wulanji village near Tongliao City in the eastern part of the region, hosted a party for about fifty villagers who had helped him build the house last evening when the roof suddenly fell on them.

More than 40 people were trapped under the collapsed beams, rescuers said, but some managed to free themselves, Xinhua news agency reported.
