DHAKA: The Bangladesh government, current SAARC chair, is examining a proposal to recognise the driving licences of all South Asian countries to facilitate greater people-to-people contact as well as trade and tourism in the country.
But that would have to be on a reciprocal basis, the foreign ministry said in separate communications sent in July to the government departments concerned.
According to the ministry, the issue of mutual recognition of the national driving licences was discussed at the 13th SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) summit held in Dhaka in November last year as well as in the SAARC tourism ministers’ conference in May this year.
At the tourism conference, the ministers recommended that national driving licences be recognised by the SAARC member-states on a reciprocal basis. “We are examining the proposal,” New Age newspaper quoted an unnamed communications ministry official as saying.
