Alexis Tsipras sworn in as Greek PM

Alexis Tsipras returns to power for second term after a sweeping victory in the parlimentary elections.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday took his oath of office a day after being re-elected in a snap general election.

Tsipras took a civil oath "to uphold the constitution and laws" of the country, and is expected to name a coalition government by Wednesday to begin applying the terms of the tough EU bailout he signed onto in July.

After being brought down by an anti-austerity revolt in his Syriza party, Tsipras yesterday comfortably won re-election by a margin of over seven percent over the runner-up, the conservative New Democracy party.

He will again partner up in government with the nationalist Independent Greeks party, his coalition allies in the previous government, but the two parties this time round will have a reduced parliamentary majority of 155 MPs in the 300-seat chamber to apply the reforms of the new bailout.
