Alok Prasad named new envoy to Sri Lanka

NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday named senior IFS officer Alok Prasad as its next High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.

The 1974-batch officer and High Commissioner to Singapore will succeed Nirupama Rao who has been posted to Beijing.

Prasad is expected to take up his assignment shortly.

The appointment comes at a time when the peace process in Sri Lanka is under severe strain because of renewed fighting between government forces and LTTE rebels.

India is increasingly being called upon to intervene to save the peace process.
