Dilawar Wazir Khan, a journalist for its Urdu service, has gone missing in Pakistan after leaving Islamabad for his home town.

LONDON: A BBC reporter has gone missing in Pakistan after leaving Islamabad for his home town in the northwest of the country, the broadcaster said on Monday.

A spokesman voiced concern over the fate of Dilawar Wazir Khan, a journalist for its Urdu service who has not been heard from since early morning Pakistan time.

He was seen with his brother Zul Fiqar Ali on Sunday at a hostel near the Islamic University in Islamabad and then left to return to his home town of Dera Ismail Khan, in the northwest Frontier province.

Shortly afterwards unidentified men turned up saying Khan had been injured. His brother called Khan, but the mobile phone was answered by a Dr. Jamshed, who said Khan was in hospital at the Pakistani Institute of Medical Sciences.

Fiqar Ali contacted the BBC office in Islamabad, but a reporter sent out to investigate found no trace of Khan or a Dr Jamshed at the hospital.

The spokesman for the BBC World Service said they were currently making inquiries and investigating Khan's "very strange" disappearance.

"We're obviously very concerned," he said.
