Several hundred activists joined by a British member of parliament gathered on Monday at a border crossing between Bangladesh and India to protest against the planned building of a controversial dam by India.

Some experts have warned that two rivers in Bangladesh's Sylhet region -- the Surma and Kushiara -- will dry up if India dams a third river, the Tipaimukh, which runs through both counrties.

British MP George Galloway and 19 Britons of Bangladeshi origin took part in the protest to ask India to scrap the project on environmental grounds.

Thousands of families who migrated from Bangladesh's Sylhet region have settled in Britain over the years and often return to their ancestral homes. Galloway's constituency has a high proportion of voters of Bangladeshi origin.
