Jack Tweed, the bereaved husband of late British reality television star Jade Goody, was charged with one count of rape on Saturday, police said. He has been remanded in custody until September 21, on a rape charge, a court heard on Saturday. The 22-year-old widower was arrested following a complaint from a young woman.
A second man has been bailed pending further inquiries, while a third man, aged 25, has also been arrested. The alleged incident took place at a house in Redbridge after the woman apparently met the men in a central London club late Thursday.
Tweed, who wore a blue hooded top, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth at his hearing at Redbridge Magistrates Court. The court heard how the suspected offence took place at Tweed’’s home in Woodford Green, east London. He was taken into custody until September 21 when he will appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
Tweed has spoken widely about how he has struggled to come to terms with Goody’s death and admitted turning to alcohol. He has been in and out of the headlines and was jailed for 12 weeks in April, shortly after his wife’s death, for assaulting a taxi driver.
Goody, who died of cervical cancer on March 22 aged 27, found fame after appearing on the British version of the Big Brother reality television show in 2002, transforming her 15 minutes of fame into a full-time celebrity career.
She released an autobiography, a perfume and an exercise video, and saw her notoriety go global when she subjected Indian film star Shilpa Shetty to racist bullying on Celebrity Big Brother in 2007.
