Wajed Mia, Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina's ailing husband is critically ill and still "not out of danger", doctors said on Thursday even as he has been under constant medical surveillance after suffering a heart attack.
"He (Mia) is not out of danger," said Dr Sanwar Hossain, the director of the private Square Hospital, where Mia is being treated for months for diabetic, blood pressure, kidney and cardiac ailments. He had suffered a heart attack on Wednesday.
Doctors could not allow Mia, a former chairman of the country's Atomic Energy Commission, to go abroad for better treatment in view of his complicated health condition though his artificial life support system was withdrawn on Thursday as "he can now breath normally".
Sometimes the situation becomes complicated when someone is exposed to multiple complications. The deteriorating health condition of Mia, who is in his late 60s, earlier forced Hasina to scrap her planned visit to the United States, Britain and Canada.
A large number of politicians across the political lines including former president HM Ershad and Mayor of Dhaka Sadek Hossain, who belongs to main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of Khaleda Zia, crowded the facility but doctors allowed none to see him in view of his health condition. Mia earlier this year went to Singapore for his treatment.
