Appreciating New Delhi's role in the rebuilding activities in Afghanistan, the Pentagon has identified India as a significant political partner of the Afghan Government.

"India is clearly a significant political and economic partner of the Afghan government," Pentagon spokesperson Geoff Morrell said.

"I know there's a great deal of investment by India in Afghanistan. I think this (Afghanistan) is a country that is in desperate needs of investment, and I'm sure would welcome it from all corners of the Earth," he said.

After the fall of Taliban, India has been involved in reconstruction and development works in Afghanistan in a massive way. However, in response to another question Morrell said he does not have any knowledge of "a game plan for India to play a more pronounced role in Afghanistan".

Early this week, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen had said India is playing a very important role in Afghanistan. "India has taken significantly positive steps to invest in Afghanistan - has for some period of time," he said at the Washington Foreign Press Center.
