India-born actor Shelley Malil, who appeared in the film The 40-Year-Old Virgin, was convicted of the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend by stabbing her atleast 20 times in 2008.

Malil, 45, was acquitted yesterday by San Diego County jurors of assault with a deadly weapon for stabbing Kendra Beebe more than 20 times during a violent quarrel at her San Marcos home in 2008. He was acquitted of residential burglary.

His defence attorney Matthew Roberts argued that Malil never intended to kill Beebe, and that the two had a violent relationship where she used to manipulate men to make them jealous, LongIsland press reported today.

He is set to be sentenced on November 18. He faces 16 years to life in prison.
