An Indian is among six foreign sailors arrested by Yemeni coast guards who also seized their ship suspected of smuggling arms to the country's Shiite rebels.

The vessel was intercepted after it was found entering Yemeni territorial waters off the western coast, a statement from Yemeni Interior ministry said yesterday. Yemeni naval boats escorted the ship to one of its naval bases on the nearby island and one Indian and five Iranians were being questioned, it said.

The authorities allege that Shiite communities backed by Iran are supporting the rebels across Mideast.

Tehran denies such claims.

The ministry, however, did not provide details about when the ship was seized but local media said that an Iranian vessel smuggling weapons was captured and its crew arrested.

Government spokesman Hassan al-Lawzi confirmed the arrests.
