LONDON: A correspondent of The Guardian has been kidnapped in Baghdad, the newspaper said on Wednesday.

Rory Carroll, the correspondent, an Irish citizen, was on assignment in Baghdad when he went missing. The newspaper believed that Carroll, 33, might have been taken by a group of armed men.

The Guardian is urgently seeking information about Carroll's whereabouts and condition. Carroll has been in Iraq for nine months. He previously worked as South Africa correspondent.

Reports say that Carroll had been visiting an Iraqi family in Baghdad's Sadr City area before his disappearance. The slum district is said to be a stronghold of radical Shia cleric Muqtada Sadr.

Carroll, a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, started his career at the Irish News in Belfast, where he was named Northern Ireland young journalist of the year in 1997. He later joined the Guardian as a home news reporter and was made South Europe correspondent in 1999.
