JERUSALEM: Israel's foreign ministry has issued guidelines for its nationals travelling to India, telling women to 'wear less revealing attire', particularly shorts and tank tops.
Men and women have been asked to avoid physical contact in public, Ynetnews reported.
Women are advised not to roam the streets alone at night, as it is not customary in India and may be dangerous, the report said.
The recommendations, reportedly formulated recently by the Israeli Embassy in India and the Jerusalem department for Israelis overseas, called on Israeli tourists to honour sacred sites in that country.
"It should be noted that India's sacred cities span the entire country and include Varanasi, Pushkar and Haridwar. Drinking of alcohol and eating meat is not permitted in these cities", the news portal said was one recommendation.
Israelis have also been told to refrain from drinking tea with strangers and accepting sweets, fearing they may contain drugs.
An Israeli foreign ministry source told the news portal that the Indian population is patient by nature, and usually avoids criticising tourists.
"Despite this, India is a conservative country, and it has become known that dozens of Israeli tourists have infuriated the locals due to inappropriate conduct", the source was quoted as saying.
"Honouring the local population would be welcomed and would prevent unnecessary unpleasantness," he added.
