ISLAMABAD: Karachi is abuzz with strong rumours that the most wanted Indian fugitive Dawood Ibrahim has escaped an assassination attempt in the vicinity of his Kawish Crown Plaza Hotel in the Pakistan’s commercial capital.

Although inspector general of Sindh police Ziaul Hassan expressed ignorance about the incident, intelligence sources say his stance was logical since no official could risk his job by conceding to the presence of Dawood in Pakistan.

Dawood had left Karachi in December 2003 in the wake of two powerful bomb blasts in Kawish Crown Plaza on July 11 and September 19, 2003.

Intelligence sources say the 2003 blasts were masterminded by Dawood’s friend-turned-foe Chhota Rajan and carried out with the assistance of the Indian intelligence agencies, which wanted to tell the world that Dawood was hiding in Karachi.

The sources say since Dawood’s once trusted lieutenant Chotta Shakeel has fallen out of favour with his boss, the D-Company chief has decided to shift the responsibility of his Pakistani operations on the shoulders of his younger brother Iqbal Kaskar, with whom he is constantly in touch through video conferencing.

Sources also say the Karachi-based Dawood aide Fayeem Machmach has been tasked to coordinate with Mumbai-based Iqbal Kaskar in connection with the business operations of the D-Company in Pakistan.
